Breaking Lines to Goal

SoccerSpecific

Here is a great activity to build the confidence of your team when building the attack in the opponent’s half of the field. This numbers up activity should provide plenty of opportunities to create quality chances on goal. Several different variations will allow you to shift the emphasis slightly.

Breaking Lines to Goal

Setup:

10V4+GK, field is set up as shown in three divided areas. Two outlet players shown in green and the coach is at half field with plenty of balls.

Instructions:

The coach dictates the point of the attack and the timing of each new build up to goal. The objective is to possess the ball in each area and then break the line with a penetrating ball forward to the next grid. 5V2 in zone one, once five passes have been completed the red team can play the ball forward to their teammates, if the two yellow defenders win the ball they can score on the two small goals. 3V1 in zone two, once three passes have been made they can advance the ball into the final zone, if the yellow defender wins the ball he can play an outlet ball to either green nuetral player, the nuetral player can look to combine with the two yellows in zone one to score on either small goal. 2v1+GK in zone three, the center forward and attacking midfielder look to combine quickly to create a quality chance on goal. If the yellow defender wins possession he can combine with any green or yellow player trying to score on either small goal. Run a designated amount of sequences to goal and then switch player personnel.

Coaching Points:

Adjust the numbering system to your liking. Variations could include switching the two green players with two small goals, change the required number of passes before advancing forward, if the GK wins possession he can build out making in a 10v6+GK to two small goals. Main focus is finding the ideal moment to pass forward and break the lines of pressure. Focus on movement with and without the ball, spacing, body angles when receiving and overall ability to combine. From a defensive standpoint: yellows defending numbers down and red team immediate pressure to win the ball back.
