High Tempo Possession

This activity is based around developing a high-tempo playing style; encouraging one-twos / give + goes in tight areas. Central players are set up 4v4 (+GKs) – this essentially creates 4 x 1v1 situations; the addition of the support players creates multiple opportunities for 2v1 overloads in each area of the pitch.

It is essential that players maintain a high-tempo rhythm in order for the activity to meet its desired outcome.

Instructions:

POSSESSION: EMPHASIS ON QUICK INTER-PLAY:

A 4v4 (+GKs) is organised inside the playing area; 4 support / wall players are positioned on the sidelines as shown. Support players are limited to 1-touch play (if possible). Quick ball circulation and movement is encouraged to create a ‘high tempo’ of play. Normal rules apply – teams attempt to score in their opponents goal.

Play is continuous; 1.5 – 2min games

Change the Support players after each game.

Coaching Points:

  • The support players create multiple opportunities for one-twos, give+goes, etc.

Progression:

Instructions:

Limit Central players to 2-touch play. Central players must remain in their designated quadrant of the pitch. Add a Central Support Player (F in Diagram) to encourage more opportunities for one-twos in central areas.
