Jump and Hunt

In the modern game, teams at the top level of world soccer attempt to gain control of the game both with and without the ball. The ability of a team to press high and win possession against the opposition is a necessary tool to have. Jump and Hunt focuses on the teams collective understanding and ability to press as a group to win the ball high and create chances in attacking areas.

Jump and Hunt

1.

Setup:

Two teams of 7/8. 3 v 3 wave practice. 3 mins games.

35 yards x 25 yards with 4 mini goals set up as above. After each set, teams switch roles. In second wave of games, switch the pressing angle to the opposite side cone.

Instructions:

Teams set up at cones as shown above. Black team starts by playing a square pass, then a diagonal pass to the yellow team. As the player passes to the opposition player, one defender comes from an angle at the halfway point to press the receiver. Yellow group attempt to win the ball and transition to goal.

  • Aggressive discipline
  • Get compact initially, make it predictable, press aggressively on triggers
  • Communicate with volume and personality
    • Composed urgency
  • Look forward first.
  • Anticipate turnovers in possession before they happen

2.

Setup:

Jump and Hunt wave Small sided games- the pitch is split into two halves. Three teams of 5, with one neutral in each half and 2 GK’s. 5 mins games.

Instructions:

Teams set up as shown above with 2 teams on the field and 1 team ready to press. Five pressing players enter on coaches command and attempt to prevent switches of play, steal the ball and score. If they are successful and score, the team they stole from becomes the defending team.

The team in possession (red) attempt to play 10 passes between them and then can switch play to the team in the other half. If this happens, the pressing team goes to press that half.

If the pressing team wins the ball but do NOT score, they continue defending (3 sets maximum).

5.

Setup:

9 v 9- Half field vertically, 50 yards wide in order to constrain the field and create more pressing opportunities. 6 mins game (high intensity game).

Instructions:

Balls start at each goalkeeper on each new possession. Field set up into halves and on each new possession, pressing team is encouraged to press high. Focus on pressing on triggers as a unit. 2 goals for scoring after a win in the oppositions half.

Coaching Points:

  • Pressing off cues (when to press, when to drop)
  • 1 v 1 defending when pressing
  • Make play predictable, force the ball into wide areas
