Playing out to the Middle-Third: Buildups from the Goalkeeper

SoccerSpecific

Building Up from the Goalkeeper takes practice + repetition and … practice + repetition under varying degrees of pressure from opponents. Options and solutions must be delivered to the players but afterwards it is up to the Players to find the correct solution at the correct moment. Players will eventually learn to be comfortable in maintaining possession through a better understanding of the options available – (ie) they have faced the situation before in a training environment and can therefore make appropriate decisions in a game environment.

The following activity creates game-like scenarios with varying degrees of pressure; pressure can be applied by 3 or 4 players in the buildup zone depending of the level / ability of your players.

The Back-4 and Midfield players are placed in positions and situations that force them to constantly seek solutions in order to advance the ball to the Central-Third of the pitch.

The Goalkeeper plays an integral role in supporting the buildup to (1) maintain possession or (2) relieve the pressure and play a long-ball to clear the danger.

Note: the activity works in both directions and is continuous.

Diagram A

Instructions:

Play starts with either GK each time – Emphasis is placed on the Buildup of the BLACK team from their back Third of pitch to Central-Third.

The Goalkeeper + Back-4 + C.Mid must attempt to buildup against 4 opponents (**Note: this can reduced to 3 opponents depending on success rate / ability of players).

BLACK team must circulate the ball, utilising the GK if necessary in order to release a player into the Central Zone (shaded). At any given time the BLACK (6) or (8) must remain in the Central Zone – they can rotate in/out to create buildup options. RED (6) or (8) must also remain in Central Zone to screen passes / dribbling attempts in the zone.

After breaking into Central Zone: 2 BLACK players can transition to the opposite half to create a 6v5 attack vs the RED Back-4 and 1 Central Mid Player.

Play is continuous and repeats in both directions.

Change roles after designated time – allow RED to buildup from GK / Back Third.

Coaching Points:

  • Quick ball circulation and movement
  • Angles / distances of support from GK to offer outlet
  • Rotations of (6) + (8) to create passing solutions
  • Fullbacks recognise opportunities to dribble / run forward

PROGRESSION:

One C.Mid (6) or (8) joins the attack plus one Fullback – either (2) or (3) to create the 6v5+GK in opposite half.

**In the Diagram – (8) has rotated into the zone to support the buildup; he has received a vertical pass and must turn in-front quickly. Left Fullback (3) will now join the attack

Play is continuous with activity working in both directions..

Change roles after designated time – allow RED to buildup from GK.
