Shoot To Score

Alan Kershaw is currently the Academy Director at Pro-Vision 3G Football Academy. He has previously been the Head Coach and Youth Coach of FK Mandal in Norway and Football Development Officer for the Cairns Region in Queensland, Australia. Alan was a professional footballer from 1969 to 1982 playing for Preston North End, Dundee United, Sydney City and IFK Malmo.

Activity #1:

Set Up:

Using a 25m X 10m area. Players in groups of 2, then 3’s, then 6’s.

Explanation:

Red players pass ball to Yellow receiver (1 touch) who always comes to meet the ball. Red players to make a movement away from ball and then come in to meet it.
Same principal as previous activity but add another player. Yellow player has 2 touches to control, turn and pass.
Set up as in diagram with 6 players, 4 work at a time for 2 minutes before changing, pass and move.

Coaching Points:

  • Timing of pass
  • Accuracy of pass
  • Communication
  • High tempo
  • Keep touches to a minimum.
  • Use both feet

Activity #2:

Set Up:

Set up as shown in diagram in match specific positions. Light warm up.

Explanation:

Players take up match specific positions and pass and move as they would in a game.

Coaching Points:

  • Add more than one ball to increase tempo and work rate.

Activity #3:

Set Up:

Set up as shown in diagram in match specific positions. All players except striker has a ball.

Explanation:

The striker can command a pass from any player in any order. In this example the striker has 8 chances to score.

Coaching Points:

  • The striker must concentrate on his body position, 1st touch, control, vision (keepers positioning) and shot selection.

Activity #4:

Set Up:

Progression from last activity. Add another striker.

Explanation:

The strikers can command a pass from any player in any order.

Coaching Points:

  • The strikers must now concentrate on communication and movement as well as body position, 1st touch, control, vision (keepers positioning) and shot selection.

Activity #5:

Set Up:

Progression from last activity. Add a defender.

Explanation:

The strikers can command a pass from any player in any order.

Coaching Points:

  • The strikers must now concentrate on movement and creating space.
  • The players must move the defender out of position to allow fellow striker a goal scoring opportunity.

Activity #6:

Set Up:

Progression from last activity. 10 v 4 + GK.

Starting point is the RED team keeper. High Tempo. The strikers on 2 touch maximum.

Coaching Points:

  • Movement – Communication – 1st touch – shot selection

Progression – Everytime the RED team has a shot on target add another yellow player.
